Oxygen Permeability Tester

Measures the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) through flexible packaging films, barrier materials, and membranes. Critical for food, pharmaceutical, and packaging quality control.

Oxygen barrier testing for food and pharmaceutical packaging

Oxygen that passes through packaging film spoils food and degrades medicines, so barrier films are specified by their oxygen transmission rate (OTR). The tester clamps the film between an oxygen side and a nitrogen carrier-gas side and measures how much oxygen reaches the sensor per square metre per day. Three independent test stations, a 50 cm² test area and a measurement range from 0.1 to over 5,000 cm³/m²/24 h cover high-barrier laminates through to standard films, to ISO 15105-2 and ASTM D3985.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is OTR?

Oxygen transmission rate: the volume of oxygen that passes through a film per unit area per day, usually in cm³/m²·24 h at defined temperature and humidity.

Which standards does the tester follow?

ISO 15105-2 and ASTM D3985, which use a carrier gas and an oxygen sensor to measure transmission through plastic film and sheeting.

How many samples can run at once?

Three independent stations test three samples in parallel; specimens up to 3 mm thick can be clamped.

Which gases are required?

High-purity nitrogen (99.999%) as carrier gas and oxygen (99.95%) as test gas.
