Test equipment for film & packaging
Strength, barrier, surface and optics — the core QC tests for blown and cast film, laminates and flexible packaging.
Film & Packaging — Overview
How is plastic film quality tested? Film is checked on four fronts: mechanical strength (Elmendorf tear to ISO 6383-2 / ASTM D1922 and tensile to ISO 527-3 / ASTM D882), barrier performance (oxygen transmission rate to ISO 15105-2 / ASTM D3985), surface behaviour on packaging lines (coefficient of friction to ISO 8295 / ASTM D1894) and optics (haze to ASTM D1003, gloss to ISO 2813, colour).
For finished packs, vacuum leak testing (ASTM D3078) confirms seal integrity. Alarge supplies these devices plus strip cutters and microtomes for consistent specimen preparation.

Frequently asked questions
Which device measures film tear resistance?
An Elmendorf pendulum tear tester, to ISO 6383-2 / ISO 1974 and ASTM D1922. It measures the force needed to propagate a tear in film, sheet or paper.
How is the oxygen barrier of packaging film measured?
With an oxygen transmission rate (OTR) tester to ISO 15105-2 / ASTM D3985, which reports how much oxygen passes through the film per area and day — critical for food and pharmaceutical packaging.
Why test the coefficient of friction of film?
Static and kinetic friction (ISO 8295, ASTM D1894) determine how film runs on form-fill-seal and wrapping machines; too high or too low causes jams or slipping stacks.
